Manjanggul Lava Tube - UNESCO World Natural Heritage
Manjanggul Lava Tube is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world, and is a designated natural monument. A lava tunnel is formed when the lava that was deep in the ground spouts from the peak and flows to the surface. Manjanggul Lava Tube has a variety of interesting structures inside including 70cm lava stalagmites and the lava tube tunnels.
Only 1km of the 13,422m Manjanggul Lava Tube is open to tourists. The inside of the tunnel sustains a temperature of 11~21℃, creating a comfortable atmosphere. There are rare animals such as bats living in the tunnel, which makes this tunnel valuable for researchers as well. The stone pillars and stalactites are widely spread and the tunnels shows off the cave’s topographical features. "Stone Turtle" is especially eye-catching because it is shaped like Jeju-do Island.
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) - UNESCO World Natural Heritage
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) was created by hydrovolcanic eruptions 100,000 years ago. The peak was once an island, but it is now connected to Jeju Island, due to the sand and gravel washed ashore from Shinyang Beach. The peak is a prime spot from which to view the sunrise. It was designated as a natural monument on July 19, 2000; a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site on July 2, 2007; a Global Geopark on October 1, 2010; and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature on November 12th, 2011. 99 rocky peaks surround the crater like a fortress and the gentle southern slope connected to water is a lush grassland. Breathtaking scenic views while taking a rest in the middle of climbing up the peak such as Mount Halla, the deep blues of the ocean, the multi-colored coast line, and the picturesque neighboring villages will become unforgettable memories.
